NNSA Approved the License Application for the First CAP1400 Project

On Feb. 25th, 2016, the assessment review team, organized by National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) in Beijing, announced the approval of the licensability for the first CAP1400 project.

 

The experts concluded that the first CAP1400 project met the currently effective nuclear safety laws, regulations and standards in China, and reached the objectives of Thirteenth Five Year plan for new-built nuclear power plants. The assessment results for licensability of the project pronounced from NNSA is reasonable and suitable, and experts suggested NNSA issue the construction permit for the first CAP1400 project.

 

NNSAs safety review for CAP1400 began in March, 2013. From then, more than 260 experts with high reputation were involved, over 30 meetings were hold and 5300 questions were put forward and discussed in depth. As the leading entity, SNPTC organized relevant institutes and companies to overcome the difficulties and obstacles and reply to each question during the whole period, which practically improved the technical scheme of CAP1400 and contributed to the promotion of domestic safety review capability.

 

CAP1400 is a large and advanced pressurized water reactor innovated by Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute. As the outcome of one of the Chinas 16 National Science and Technology Major Projects, CAP1400 is intended to be deployed in large numbers across the country, and also expected to be the prioritized option for oversea utilities.
