The 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE25) held a forum on Experience Feedback of Gen III/New NPPs Construction. As the first appeared topic on ICONE, this forum comprehensively reviewed the summarized the problems and experiences in the construction of Gen III NPPs, which will contribute to the implementation of following-up Gen III technologies. This forum was chaired by Mr. Bin Wang from the State Nuclear Power Engineering Company.
Experience feedback of AP1000 supporting project improves the reliable development of nuclear power industry
As a senior engineer, who participated in the whole journey of the world’s first AP1000 construction, Mr. Bin Wang introduced that the advanced Gen III NPP became the reality from the drawing. The long construction period, large amount of involved parties, and demanding of safety and quality all bring problems and challenges to designers and constructors. Simultaneously, the sharing and communicating of precious experiences and feedback could benefit the safer and more reliable development of nuclear power industry.
Mr. Haydn Doughty from Westinghouse Electric Company LLC has over 10 years’ on-site experiences in Sanmen. He introduced the latest construction condition in the supporting project and the achievements China made, including main pump operation test, passive safety system test, I&C protection system test, containment structure integrity and leakage rate test, integrated test of nuclear island and conventional island. The supporting project construction experiences in China will establish the standards for following-up AP1000 construction in the whole world.
The construction optimization of CAP1400 demonstration project shortens the period and advances the quality
Mr. Lin Li from State Nuclear Power Engineering Company introduced the preparation work for CAP1400 demonstration project and the main construction optimization measures. CAP1400 applied the modularization construction and open-top hoisting installation. Up to now, the construction design is completed, 88 equipment related is satisfactory to the current progress before FCD, facilities of main contractors are in use, the progress of CA/CV/CS is available to meet the requirements of NI continue construction before FCD+12. The main construction optimization measures have improved the working environment effectively, shortened the critical paths of NI construction, ensured the construction quality and mitigated potential safety risks.
HPR1000 management feedback on Gen III NPP construction
Mr. Qingli Wang from CGN-CNPEC presented the key features, the units progress and the following-up development of HPR1000. HPR1000 is developed by China based on technologies, expertise and experience in the design, construction, operation and R&D accumulated over the past 30 years. The construction program of HPR1000 has been initiated to improve the technology and optimize construction sequence, including 16 new techniques, 9 new management platforms, 7 new materials and 16 new equipment applications.
Mr. Guocai Chen from Fujian Fuqing Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. Introduced the HPR1000 construction management practices and innovation. HPR1000 project has taken the advantage of innovation and improvement in terms of project organization, human resources allocation, coordination system, risk identification and control. A series of managerial measures have been adopted.
The modularization construction significantly increase the economic indicators
Mr. Hideki Kurosaki from Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy presented that apart from safety and reliability, the economic indicators are also magnificent for nuclear power construction and development. He proposed that the construction measures and strategies should be considered as priorities to improve the economy. The total amount of large-scaled construction modular and mechanical modular has reached over 200 in nuclear power plants in Japan. The modularization construction significantly shortened the construction period as well as upgraded the quality.
This forum collected, shared, analyzed, handled and summarized the construction feedback during the construction processes, which provide references and experiences for following-up new NPPs.
