On July, 3rd, 2017, The General Conference of 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE25) was held successfully in Shanghai International Convention Center. ICONE25 was hosted jointly by Chinese Nuclear Society (CNS), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering (JSME), and organized by Shanghai Nuclear Research & Design Institute (SNERDI).

President of CNS, Mr. Guanxing Li, Former President of ASME, Mr. J. Robert Sims, President of JSME, Ms. Marie Oshima, and Executive Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Mr. Bo Zhou were invited to deliver the welcome speeches for ICONE25. Vice Chairman of China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), Mr. Yiren Wang, Executive Secretary of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Mr. Changle Xiang, Chief Administrative Officer of Energy Regulation, China National Energy Administration, Mr. Ye Li, Director-General of Department of Nuclear Power Safety Supervision and Management, National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), Mr. Bo Tang, and Deputy Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Dazhu Yang made congratulation remarks during the General Conference.

Chairman of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), Mr. Binghua Wang, gave a speech on Advanced Passive Nuclear Power Technology Development in China. 10-year self-development of Gen III Nuclear Power is not only one of the most important periods of China’s Nuclear Power industry, but also the significance of international nuclear power development. SPIC is deepening cooperation with domestic and foreign partners, overcoming various difficulties and challenges, and turning the Gen III passive nuclear power technology from the blueprint into reality. The world’s first AP1000 unit will be connected to the grid; the independently developed CAP1400 will be constructed; and the Gen III nuclear power supply chain is formed through the realization of demonstration project.

He pointed out that SPIC aims to lead nuclear power development and dedicate green energy. Adhering to the principle of  innovation, sharing, cooperation and win-win, SPIC is committed to creating values for customers with advanced technologies, mature engineering and management, stable and efficient supply system and localization experience as well as sound ability for investment and financing. We are confident and capable to contribute to the safe development of global nuclear power with our advanced passive nuclear technology.

Senior Vice President of State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) and President of SNERDI, Dr. Mingguang Zheng, was invited to deliver a speech on Expectations of Nuclear Power Development. He analyzed the situations and challenges of nuclear power industry, and proposed suggestions on strengthening the advancement, economy and cleanness of nuclear power.

He suggested that design needs carefully and comprehensively coordinated, stimulated and reconciliated among thermal, hydraulic, mechanics, electric, magnetic and etc. for better safety and economy. All plans and schedules of project shall be correlated and integrated each other to know clearly the risk and significance. Besides, regulators, plant vendors, manufacturers, owners, companies, and universities should work together to realize all the expectations; fleeting construction of Gen III and engineering of SMRs should be promoted to fit the energy demand and replace the existing Gen II gradually; nuclear industry alliance, sharing data and experiences of plant lifecycle are critical to the technology innovation.

The General Conference also invited guests from OECD/NEA, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corporation (CNEC). Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Shanghai Electric (Group) Co., Ltd., World Nuclear Association (WNA), Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, The Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association, EDF China, The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), SNC-Lavalin Nuclear Inc., New AREVA Asia, and Nuclear Risk Research Center.

The International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE) is the premier global conference on nuclear reactor technology. This conference is a "must-attend" for anyone who wants to stay technically current and on top of industry trends and developments. It features Industry Forums, Technical, Keynote, Plenary and Poster Sessions, plus Workshops where international subject matter experts present their views and expertise on current topics of importance to the world-wide nuclear community. Leaders from industry, government and academia gather each year to present and explore cutting edge technical issues and solutions for the challenges that the nuclear industry faces today. Through the ICONE student program, the conference also fosters the development of future nuclear professionals.
