From November 11 to 15, 2019, Deputy Chief Engineer of Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute (SNERDI), Mr. Shi Guobao, was invited to attend the Consultancy Meeting on the Preparation of the Coordinated Research Project on In-vessel Melt Retention Benchmark at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarter in Vienna.
IVMR is a key severe accident mitigation strategy adopted by operating nuclear power plants and advanced water reactors. According to the requirement of SSR2-1, IVMR is a typical DEC case, the safety demonstration of IVMR effectiveness is needed. Previous IAEA meetings on this topic and state-of-the-art knowledge concluded that further work would be necessary, therefore the Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on Developing a phenomena identification and ranking table (PIRT) and a validation matrix, and performing a benchmark for In-Vessel Melt Retention is expected to last 4 years starting from 2020. The purpose of the consultancy meeting is to further develop the program of work for the CRP.
Mr. Shi made a presentation on IVR Related Design Features, Assessment and Experiments in China, shared the specific experiences with delegates from other Countries, and provided many suggestions for the program of the CRP.
