The year 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the launch of the 728 Project (the First Nuclear Power Project launched on February 8^th, 1970) in accordance with Premier Zhou Enlai's important directive on Shanghai's development of nuclear power. It also marks the 50th birthday of Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute Co. LTD (SNERDI) and the Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, as well as the 50th anniversary of the development of Shanghai and China’s nuclear power industries.

On Sep. 22, 2020 SNERDI held a symposium in memory of the 50^th anniversary of the 728 Project. Former leaders and advanced representatives from Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, Qinshan Nuclear Power Company, Shanghai Electric Group and SNERDI who participated in the 728 Project, incumbent managers and young and middle-aged representatives from various departments of SNERDI, as well as leaders from the China Nuclear Energy Industry Association, Shanghai Urban and Rural Construction and Transportation Trade Union, State Power Investment Corporation headquarters and other companies of SPIC’s nuclear energy sector attended this symposium. The symposium was chaired by Cao Yongzhen, SNERDI’s Deputy Secretary of CPC and Chairman of the Company’s Labor Union.

Huang Xiong, Director of the Working Committee of the Shanghai Urban and Rural Construction and Transportation Trade Union, was invited to attend the symposium and deliver a speech. Huang pointed out that the 50-year development and innovation of SNERDI is vivid history of the development of New China, the history of reform and opening-up and the history of China’s nuclear power industry. Looking back upon the 50 years of development, “Independent innovation” has always been SNERDI’s marrow of tradition and has been built into the genes of SNERDI. “I hope that SNERDI will continue to give play to its innovative advantages, actively align with the national strategies and seize the historical opportunities to create “the Glory of China” once again in the new era.” Huang said. “SNERDI is encouraged to keep exploiting its professional talents and take this 50^th anniversary event as an opportunity to better stimulate the vitality of talents, so as to form the driving force of wining the future and activate strong momentum for further development; continue to give play to the regional advantages and work closely with the Shanghai municipal government to make positive contributions to the construction of Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center and the development of Shanghai's nuclear power industry.

Wang Mingdan, the President of SNERDI, made a speech titled with "Remain true to our original aspiration, keep up making breakthroughs and embrace each opportunity" reviewing the glorious history of SNERDI over the past 50 years, and focused on reporting the company's work since the integration and a prospect of the future. Wang Mingdan pointed out that in the 50 years of independent development of China’s nuclear power, SNERDI has always been brave in undertaking its mission and facilitating innovation and stood at the forefront and participated in China’s nuclear power development from the very beginning. The past 50 years have been the continuous break-through, transformation and growth of SNERDI, which is a microcosm of an irresistible trend of China's nuclear power industry and even the national industrial system. Facing a long, arduous but splendid journey ahead, we have the confidence that we can make new and greater contributions to the high-quality development of China’s nuclear energy industry and continue to write “the Glory of China” by making all-out efforts to expand R&D, design, and engineering under the SPIC’s “2035 First-Class Strategy” and the leadership of the Party Central Committee and the State Council.

Wang Xun, Deputy Director of Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, introduced the nuclear power development of Shanghai over the past 50 years. Wang Xun pointed out that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, we will take "independent innovation, looking-ahead planning, and integrated development" as the main line of development, and establish "five leading centers" in Shanghai (ie, nuclear technology innovation center, nuclear power equipment center, nuclear power operation and maintenance service center, nuclear power engineering and construction center, and international cooperation and exchange center) for nuclear power development in China. We will focus on the orderly nuclear technology research and development, making full use of advantages in equipment manufacturing, improving the capacity of nuclear technology supporting the internationalization, and accelerating the development of new industries in the nuclear energy field and promoting the nuclear power industry with cutting-edge technologies.

Jin Yumin, deputy director of Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, and Wang Mingdan, the President of SNERDI, jointly released the Commemorative Album of the 50 Years of Shanghai Nuclear Power. The album, jointly compiled by Shanghai Nuclear Power Office and related enterprises, reproduced the growth and brilliant achievements of Shanghai nuclear power in the past 50 years.

A commemorative medal was specially produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of China’s first nuclear power project---Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (the 728 Project) and to pay tribute to the predecessors. Wang Zurong, former Director of Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, Yu Hongfu, former General Manager of Nuclear Power Qinshan Joint Venture Co., LTD, Qian Yi, former Deputy Director of Shanghai Boiler Works Ltd and Lin Weixian, former Deputy Chief Engineer of SNERDI received the commemorative medals on behalf of all the experts. Wang Xun, Deputy Director of Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, Cao Shuilin, Deputy Party Secretary of China National Nuclear Power Operation Management Co., LTD., Tang Weibao, Chief Engineer of Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group Co., LTD., and Yan Jinquan, Deputy General Manager/Chief Engineer of SNERDI, jointly presented the commemorative medals and flowers to the expert representatives.

Zhao Chengkun, standing Deputy Director of Expert Committee of China Nuclear Energy Association and Director of National Nuclear Safety Administration, Shen Zengyao, former President of SNERDI, Li Hefu, former Director of Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, Qian Yi, former Deputy Director of Shanghai Boiler Works Ltd, and Yao Qiming, former General Manager of Qinshan NPP Phase III, delivered representative speeches on their participation in the construction of China’s first nuclear power project---Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (the 728 Project), and shared their understanding and comprehension in the contribution to nuclear power development in China. While looking into the future, they encouraged all the successors to grasp new opportunities, meet new challenges, take new actions, and create new brilliance in the new era of nuclear power.

Xi Bin from Shanghai Nuclear Power Office and Chen Yuqing from SNERDI delivered speeches as representatives of young employees. Yu Dili and Gu Song, young employees of SNERDI, brought a recitation Ode to the 50^th Anniversary of the 728 Project, leading the participants to recall the significant years together.

In the summary of the meeting, Cao Yongzhen, SNERDI’s Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee & Chairman of the Labor, pointed out that the new era and new technology bring new opportunities for us to embrace bravely. Standing at the milestone of the 50^th anniversary where we can see from the history to the future, we realize that we have gained confidence from 50 years of independent innovation, 50 years of sincere cooperation and 50 years of historical inheritance. We will inherit and carry forward the spirit of “Two Bombs, One Satellite” (Two Bombs refers to the atomic bomb and the intercontinental ballistic missile, while Ones Satellite refers to the artificial satellite), the spirit of “Four Everything” in nuclear industry (the cause is more important than everything, the responsibility is more heavier than everything, working carefully and precisely is blended into everything and progress will achieve everything) and the spirit of “Glory of China” from nuclear power workers of the older generation. We will continuously deepen the cooperation, work together to open up and support each other to continue the glory and create the future together in the new era of nuclear energy.
